What they do |
The nurses are based in the treatment room
at the practice. They see patients for a variety of reasons from day to day
activities such as ear syringing, blood tests, dressings, immunisations, family
planning and
travel advice. Patients are seen for the management
of long-term conditions such as diabetes,
asthma, heart disease, hypertension and COPD [Chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease] Although the nurses run an appointment
system, if necessary patients can be seen for emergency treatment such as minor
burns and lacerations or urgent blood tests.
Another large area of their workload is health screening such as New Patient and
Well Women health checks. The nurses carry out the majority of cervical smear
tests and results are personally sent out to patients. All the nurses
have undertaken the Cancer Screening course to enable them to offer
a safe and comprehensive service.
The nurses carry out the regular checks for people with chronic diseases such as
diabetes, asthma, heart disease, and hypertension.
All have received training through the 'South and West Devon Smoking Advice Service' so that they can offer help and support to those wishing to give up smoking.
The Healthcare Assistant takes blood for testing by the laboratory, helps with procedures such as ECGs, spirometry and blood pressure monitoring and can give smoking cessation advice.
The Nurse Practitioner, as well as
her treatment room duties, can deal with minor illnesses and holds some
surgeries in conjunction with the Doctors.
The practice nurse team work closely with their health visitor and district nurse colleagues to provide high quality care to the patients registered with the practice.
