We like to see our patients in the asthma clinic for review every 12 months even if they are well. This gives us the opportunity to assess any symptoms they may have and adjust their medication if necessary. Working together with patients we aim to keep asthma symptoms to a minimum and there is no reason why the majority of patients with asthma should not lead completely normal lives.

There is a practice asthma register in place and this allows the nurses to ensure patients are offered regular appointments if necessary and that contact can be made with those who do not attend.

We have a nurse who has received specialist training at the ‘Asthma Training Centre’ and can provide information and support to colleagues and patients.

As well as helping people understand more about their asthma the clinic setting provides the following:

• An opportunity to ensure that the inhaler device prescribed is suitable and that it is being used effectively. (A range of inhaler devices are available for patients to try).
• Teaching about the use of peak flow readings and written self- management plans where appropriate.
• Helping patients to recognise when their asthma is not well controlled and how to deal with emergencies.
• Helping patients to prevent an attack by using their improved understanding of asthma and its treatments.
• Access to written information about asthma
• An opportunity to discuss any worries, and answers any questions about treatment or progress.
